  • Sorashige Book (27 Aug)

    • He commented on how 24hr Tv had just finished and asked if everyone had watched. He said he would be waiting for everyone’s impressions of NEWS’ performance.

    • The first message was from someone who said that it seemed like it must be difficult for Shige since he’s been so busy lately and asked him to take care.

Shige said that he has a tendency to get sick so he has to take care, but that he’s ok and likes being busy. He talked about how he talked about it with Kame on the set of the 24hr Tv drama.

    • The next message was from an Indonesian fan. She talked about how she became a NEWS fan from seeing their performance and how listening to ‘U R not alone’ and ‘Full swing’ helped her. (Shige was amused that she wrote Full swing in English and not katakana) She said she was able to graduate and asked for advice in how to talk during interviews because she always gets nervous.

Shige said she’ll definitely be ok, everyone gets nervous. He encouraged her to do her best in her interviews.

    • For music club this week Shige recommended a group called CHAI, saying that he likes female vocalists. It’s a 4 member group where of the members are twins. Shige talked about how when NEWS does promotional interviews when they put out albums, sometimes after the interview they’ll just chat with the interviewer. The writer for the magazine ‘Songs’ is very knowledgable about music, and he knows about up and coming artists. Shige gets this writer to tell him about artists, and he told him about CHAI. He said that he thought they were good and really unique, but it wasn’t until seeing them on Fuji TV’s Love Music Fes that he really came to understand their charm. Since then he’s been hooked. He played the song he saw them perform on TV, ‘Boys ・Seko・Men

    • Shige continued on the topic from last week, FUJIROCK. He talked about the artists he saw, and said that even though he went to a big music festival with international artists he ended up pretty much only seeing Japanese acts. He saw Cocco, Never Young Beach (who’s song he recently played on the radio), Cornelius, and Ozawa Kenji among others, and regretted missing The Avalanches. He talked about how packed in they were watching Ozawa Kenji. He talked about the performance and how the screens showed the lyrics rather than the artist because he wants you to sing along. He talked for awhile about the different stages they went to on the first day and how excited he was and how great the performances were. He also talked about seeing Lorde and Thundercat’s performances, both artist who’s songs he’s played on the radio before. He said that there are some regrets he has about who he wasn’t able to see, so he wants to do more research and go again next year.

    • The guest this week was Tegoshi.

    • This week’s episode began with Tegoshi doing the opening talk. He talked for awhile without stopping and introduced the show as Tegoshi Yuya’s Tchan NEWS. He also mentioned that NEWS got to sing ‘U R not alone’ on 24hr TV and that Koyama was a main personality for the 2nd year in a row. He addressed Koyama and asked him how it was, and then without pause said that Koyama wasn’t there. He said that he’d love to be considered for 24hr TV next year. He then started to talk about summer, and how he was able to go to see fireworks and the beach the beach this year. In the middle of that you can hear Koyama laugh, and when Tegoshi continues to talk without pausing he tries to cut in saying he just arrived. When Tegoshi ignores him he suddenly yelled ‘Sorry!!!’ surprising Tegoshi who said he hadn’t noticed.

They briefly talked about how Tegoshi had played soccer that day, and Koyama thanked Tegoshi for doing the opening saying he had talked quite a lot and introduced the first song.

    • ♪ U R not alone ♪

    • Koyama commented that Tegoshi had a good expression and Tegoshi said it’s because he’s been enjoying summer. Koyama pointed out that Gai-san was holding a cue card that said ‘This is Koyama’ and he complained that it was unnecessary and Tegoshi teased that it was because he’s an extra.

Koyama then went to read the first message saying that he hadn’t picked any this time. T:I picked them! K: Seriously?? T: I picked them all! (both cracking up) K: Sorry sorry.

They talked about going to see a Johnny’s Jr concert called ‘King’s Treasure’ that starred Lovetune and Travis Japan. They said that Tegoshi had been mentioned in the MC by Shimekake, he said that he wanted to go out to eat with Tegoshi and had invited him but they hadn’t been able to go.

Koyama asked Tegoshi if he had traded contact information with Shimekake. Tegoshi said that last year when he went to go see MADE, Shimekake had been watching him quite intensely even during the performance. Later he told Tegoshi that he loved him and was forward in asking him to hang out. They went out to eat together once, but haven’t been able to go again.

Tegoshi said that when gets messages from him he does reply and he’ll go if he can find the time. Koyama encouraged their kohai to reach out more to Tegoshi, because he’s really nice. Tegoshi laughed and said that he was happy to have Shimekake reach out to him.

Tegoshi said that whenever they talk about which juniors they should have back dance for them Travis Japan comes up everytime. But it hasn’t really worked out due to Travis Japan’s busy schedule since they’re pretty popular with their sempai. They said it would be interesting if they could at least once.

    • The next message was from a listener who said that they don’t really know what’s trendy lately and have trouble following conversations. Since NEWS seems to be knowledgeable about that sort of thing they asked them to fill them in.

They commented that Tegoshi tends to be about half a year behind whatever comedian or phrase is currently popular. Tegoshi suggested a few things, including the phrase ‘manji’ but was told that that had been popular last year. Koyama and Tegoshi both wondered what was popular now. Koyama asked Tegoshi about the gags he does sometimes in the openings for ItteQ and Tegoshi said that he doesn’t study up on what’s popular for it. Koyama then brought up the time Tegoshi filmed the opening for a soccer program and ItteQ at the same time and said that it was really funny. Koyama pointed out that Tegoshi’s ‘Tei’ is actually pretty popular. Tegoshi said that sometimes when he’s sighted while he’s out he gets asked to do it, but it’s embarrassing to do in that kind of situation. They said that actually Massu and Shige are more well informed about what’s currently popular than they are. Tegoshi said that he’s the type to not want to follow what’s currently popular.

    • The next message was from a listener who said that even though they live in Hyogo prefecture they’re a supporter of the Saitama soccer team. (T: Ohh!! … I just hit my hand on the chair here!) They said that they love soccer so between school and work they would take the bus to Saitama to go watch their soccer matches. They said their hometown also has a soccer time and recently they been going to see the neighboring prefecture, Osaka’s, soccer matches as well. They said that they’ve been told that supporting multiple teams like that is ‘soccer infidelity’. They said they also like the J-league and wanted to know if it was really that bad to like multiple teams.

Koyama asked Tegoshi if you’re only allowed to support one team and he said that that wasn’t the case. K: Well how about if it were “I support groups other than NEWS as well”? T: HUH??

Koyama said that that’d be his reaction too, and asked if it’s different for soccer. Tegoshi said for soccer it’s fine but wanted to add that for their fans he gets jealous. For example, at Johnny’s countdown when he see’s NEWS fans being able to perfectly dance the choreography for other groups he ends up thinking “Huh??” and gets jealous. Koyama said that he understood and it’s the same for him.

T: To be honest, I get jealous! T: I don’t even know the song! I’m a Johnny’s and I don’t know it! Why do you, who says that you love me, know it?!? HA HA!! (Koyama and Tegoshi laugh)

Tegoshi said that he thinks soccer is different. He said first of all, liking soccer is the most important part. The worst would be after being told that it’s ‘infidelity’ that they stop going to watch soccer. Tegoshi then got really fired up talking about J-league and the Japan National Team

K: But it might be the same for Johnny’s. What if they like Johnny’s, and amongst all the ‘teams’ they pick NEWS. But because they watch NEWS vs KAT-TUN, or just KAT-TUN’s matches too they’re able to dance along to their songs. But, their number one is NEWS. What about that? T: NO!! (laughter) K: I get it, we want to monopolize. T: It’s fine. K: Yeah T: It’s fine, but if you really like (NEWS) would you really memorize other groups’ songs? [...] You can’t memorize it if you don’t watch it a fair amount.

T: It’s fine, I’m grateful that they’re supporting the Johnny’s family but […] as soon as something happens are you going to just become some other groups’ fans?

They talked about it for awhile more, about how they’re both the type to get jealous and tell fans not to stray with other groups.

T: As an apology, I’ll show my left nipple. K: Why do you always show your nipple! Why is it always your left nipple! You like the left nipple don’t you. T: It’s because I’m offering up my heart. K: Offering it up? (laughter)

    • Last was the ‘Solving your problems summertime’ corner. The message was from a listener who said that she’s not good at talking to boys her age. When passing boys she knows on the street, she looks down not knowing what to do. Recently, when passing a boy she knew from class, their eyes met and she ran away. She wanted their advice.

They commented that since she’s a third year in highschool it’s fine for her to have some romance soon. Through falling in love you learn things. Tegoshi said Japanese expressions of love are very dry, so they should watch American movies and dramas.

Koyama said that the way she’s behaving, looking down and running away, might actually make them think that she likes them. Tegoshi talked about how you can’t return to your highschool years, once you become a college student or an adult love kind of becomes normal.

    • At the end Koyama said that Tegoshi had said a word that couldn’t be broadcast so they had to edit it out.

    • Tegoshi started by saying August is ending in Tokyo (M: It’s the same everywhere! It’s not just limited to Tokyo. T: Of course I get that, even with my values. Like, I don’t think it’s February in Hokkaido now. M: I’m glad.) They discussed how it’s been raining for so many days, and Massu asked if they’d woken up because it was so cold even without the air conditioner. (T: Where are you staying at? Russia or something? M: Nonono it happened! T: No way! Would anyone wake up at around 23-4 degree celcius!? M: It happened. Sakura: It happened. T: It was hot for me. M: Where are you staying at? The desert?) They then joked that Tegomass is staying at the Arctic and the desert respectively and always specially travel all the way here for NEWS and TM's activities. (T: I wish they’d pay for my airfare! M: It’s a private jet for me. T: PJ? Cool!) They returned to the topic of how this summer is unusually cool and how it might affect the weather ahead.

    • They then moved on that by the time this goes on air, 24hr TV would have been over, NEWS would have appeared, Koyama would probably have played a big part for the show. Though they can’t say for sure because it wasn’t over when they did the recording. Going on to the request, the listener asked for “Yuuyake to Koi no Jitensha”. She said that she’s now in her third year in high school, and as she’s in a girls’ school, the first two summers were spent with her friends, and club activities. As she’s taking her entrance exams this year, she’s spending her summer holidays studying. As she hasn’t spent any of her high school days on love, it’s a little sad, and she tries to experience that feeling through this song. Though it was a tough summer for her with all the studying, she managed to spend a fruitful summer through this song and Tegomass. She’ll continue to work hard. Before playing the song, the 2 of them made fun of Sakura for slipping over her words today very much. (M: Shall we do it from the start again? Sakura: Nope it’s okay!)

Do they have any recommendations? They said that takoyaki parties aren’t that common in Tokyo, and asked the staff if it’s common in Osaka. They tried to figure out an equivalent for Tokyo and Massu said it’s probably like randomly deciding to order pizza? When you decide to put something quick together. Tegoshi and Sakura then reacted and M: Why are you guys listening to me as if I grew up in Osaka or something? I have no idea! T: No way. Can’t we do that? M: I pretty much grew up in Tokyo. T: Can’t we do that? M: I spent more time in Tokyo than you. T: That’s true. Hometown: Tokyo. M: Yeah. But we had a takoyaki machine at home though we never had a takoyaki party at home. I did buy a machine and have a takoyaki party with my friends after I grew up though. T: Oh. So what did you put inside? M: Octopus, octopus! T: Nonono. So are you trying to tell the listener now that the takoyaki party Masuda-san had with his friends was an ordinary one, so it can’t be helped if it was boring? M: No no. Sakura: That’s mean! Massu then explained that he basically likes takoyaki with octopus, and doesn’t acknowledge anything else as takoyaki. For example, if you put squid in, it’s not takoyaki anymore. Tegoshi and Sakura then said that it’s not about making takoyaki, but having fun with friends making things similar to takoyaki. Tegoshi said he’d do things like add tabasco or chili peppers, something like a forfeit game as that would make it fun. Sakura shared she’s ever put chocolate inside, and it was yummy. Kimchi was nice too. Massu went back to his rationale on how takoyaki should be kept as it is, and kimchi can be eaten separately, like how you eat kimchi on its own for yakiniku. T: She probably wants to upload it onto Instagram or something, like “takoyaki party now” and hope to get many likes. Sakura: Why are you guys suddenly attacking me? When I’ve never even been to a takoyaki party?TM were surprised, and she said she’s only done it at home alone or with her mother. Tegoshi said he has, though the number of times can be counted with one hand. They then concluded that they can try Tegoshi’s suggestion.

    • A listener wrote in to say she’s in the first grade of middle school and went to watch a movie alone for the first time recently. As movies are generally 2-hour long and people watch without speaking to each other, she thinks it’s an activity that’s meant to be done alone and was surprised to hear her friends say they go with friends or families. She asked if the 3 of them are the type to go for movies alone or with friends. At the end of her mail, she said she’ll always, always support them, and that she loves Tegoshi. And Massu too, in parentheses. They commented that she’s the considerate kind who made sure to say she likes both of them. Tegoshi said sometimes there’re mails that sound like they totally hate him. M: And Tegoshi’s always crying after the radio programme is over. Sakura: We’d be passing him tissues and stuff. T: OH YEAH? Is my heart that weak behind the scenes? When I’m saying “Bring anything on!” in front of the camera? M: Like put the hood on and cry. T: Stop it. That was the Tokyo Dome! Stop it! You’re always bring that up. Such a bully. Tegoshi then went back to talking about the movies, saying he’s the same and don’t understand why people go with someone. He also doesn’t get the meaning of sharing their thoughts after coming out from the movies. So he always goes alone. Massu said he can go alone, but doesn’t go by himself. It’s usually a friend who brings up a movie they want to watch, and he joins them. T: So what happens after the movie is over? M: Well for example, if I fell asleep during the movie, I’ll be apologising. T: Sorry. That’s completely beyond the answer I was expecting. M: It’s like a ball that flew out from nowhere. Sakura: It wasn’t a strike, just a ball. Sakura said she goes alone too, and they tried to figure out which is more mainstream. They said it seems like it’s mostly couples, groups of females, or families, not so much of groups of males. Like, what are 2 men going to do together? Tegoshi shared again his story of bawling at “Koizora”, and the female of the couple beside him started telling the male that “Look, the blonde beside me is crying like a baby!” He said it was super embarrassing. They said how such reactions deter people from doing things alone, like if Tegoshi had a weaker heart he’d never go watch a movie alone again, and how some people find it hard to watch NEWS’ concerts alone. That’s not good. Sakura said she goes alone too, as it’s so much easier. Tegoshi agreed, so you don’t have to match someone else’s timing. Massu brought up that it might be because they’re both single childs and are more self-centered. T, Sakura: Yeah, we’ve been watching alone since forever. Not like we had any siblings to go together with. M: It’s not like I’ve been to the movies with my sister. T, Sakura: HAHAHAHA. They said it’s cool for her to go to the movies herself for her age. Tegoshi then tried to use an example from the “Terminator”, but just went “You know, like this?” and Sakura and Massu were like, like what? And because of your lack of explanation now we have to explain what you are doing for you. They told her they think it’s cool, so no worries.

On the following day, he had about an hour or so before his appointment so he went to look for one. As he had a hair dryer he liked, he went to the shop and found the sample, but it was out of stock and had to be ordered if he wanted it. But he couldn’t imagine not having one for even a day and went to another shop. He ended up buying a white hair dryer of another type, even though he had really wanted the black one. It was a good one that makeup artists usually use anyway and he found it good after using it a few days. He mentioned this episode with his hair stylist, saying how he’d actually preferred the black one he owned, but the white one is nice too. They also discussed the different brands of hair dryers. The next time he went to the hair stylist, the hair stylist presented him with the latest black hair dryer. He was really surprised, and said now he has a spare. Now he doesn’t have to worry about having his hair dryer spoil on him, and is using them in turns.

He asked if the summer holidays are over, and how the start of a new school term is always kind of exciting, as some people might have undergone some image changes and all. He said that he likes meat stuff, like karaage, asparagus wrapped in meat, tamagoyaki and so on. It’d be nice if the entire bento box can be filled up with just side dishes, without any rice, and in place of that, maybe 2 onigiris packed separately. He also shared how he likes mini tomatoes, but not putting them into bento boxes. Maybe some broccoli too? “Sounds like there isn’t enough red colour...can’t be help then, let’s put in some mini tomatoes.” And even though it’d become heavy, maybe some soup? And macaroni salads. He talked that he bought bento boxes when he was in high school, and he bought the same one almost every day - pork fried with miso.

    • The next listener said they used abura age (deep fried tofu slices) in place of meat when cooking curry one day, because they ran out of meat, and asked what meat Massu likes in his curry best. He said that he has probably never tried having abura age in curry, and talked a little on how he has never really known the taste of abura age, as they take on the taste of what they are added into. As for what he likes in his curry, he likes chicken, pork, beef, seafood....anything is fine. But if there’s not meat at all and only abura age, it might feel like something is lacking. He might feel differently after trying abura age curry though. Finally he said that he likes chicken that has first been stir fried a bit first before being put into the curry.

They observed that his make up for mina is a little different from his usual style, and asked if he asks for it to be different because it’s a fashion magazine, or does he leave it up to the make up artist. He first commented, is “37” a significant number? Anyway, there is nothing different about the make up, it’s the same, and it’s probably the hairstyle that is different? To match the different clothes. He doesn’t really give instructions on the makeup, and generally leaves it up to the hair and makeup artist. He’d at the very most ask for his hair to be a little ruffled, but lets the stylist decide how ruffled it should be. The makeup is pretty much the same, as it’s not as if he gets eyeliner or his brow drawn. It’s basically a “natural Masuda” that he tries to show people. Even though they understand everyone is different and there isn’t a need to get anxious, they still get anxious somehow and gets worried. Is there anything that Massu gets anxious about, even though there isn’t really a need to? If there are any solutions to that, please share them too. Massu first congratulated them for turning 29, and said that he’s 31, but “no anxiety” at all. He feels it’s nice that they want to get married, but there isn’t a need to compare with other people. As for whether or not he feels anxious about things he doesn’t have to...Well, he isn’t the super positive type who doesn’t worry, but it depends on things? Like with singing and dancing, he doesn’t worry much about failing. Basically, he can’t do what he can’t (fufufu) Like, if he’s already practised so hard and he still can’t do it, then he just can’t. So if you can’t do it because you don’t even try, it’s your fault. But if you’ve already practised really hard and did well for rehearsals, but didn’t do as well for the actual run, that can’t be helped because you just couldn’t react to the situation at that point in time, even though that’s not a good thing, of course. He mentioned that he ever saw on TV, a research that had findings that proved being overly anxious reduces your lifespan. So he thought it might be good to set aside some time to relax. He does think that being anxious and wanting to be better is good, but please do that in moderation and relax accordingly.
