Sweet Tears~
The first time Uchi ever saw Koyama cry was when they went to an amusement park together.
"Let's go on that one!" Uchi said excitedly, eyes sparkling as he stared up at the jumble of twists and turns that ended with a thrilling drop at the end. He turned to look at his friend and saw him trembling slightly.
"Don't tell me you're scared," Uchi said teasingly, tugging at Koyama's parka, which was identical to his own. They had bought the matching jackets a little while back.
"How about no?" the older boy suggested, licking his lips nervously. He hated to admit to the younger one that he was scared of heights, but staring up at the huge rollercoaster that Uchi wanted to go on, he knew that he had to.
"Why not?" Uchi asked impatiently. They hadn't gone on ANY of the bigger rides yet. Why was Koyama chickening out on him? Maybe it would've been better had he asked Ryo to come with him instead.
"I'm...uh...sort of afraid of heights?" Koyama said slowly. He hated to ruin Uchi's fun, but that ride was a definite no. "You can go on it without me if you want!" he added hurriedly, trying not to hurt the other's feelings.
"Come on! I promise, it'll be fun!" Uchi insisted, grabbing the older boy's wrist, attempting to drag him into the line.
"No no no no!!" Koyama panicked. "I don't want to!! Don't make me, please!! I'm NOT going on that!!" Tears formed in the corners of his eyes from the terror of just thinking about going on the rollercoaster. "Please Uchi, stop! I don't wanna~!!!"
"Oh come on you big baby! I can't believe you're older than me and you're----" Uchi stopped when he turned and saw the older boy crying as they drew nearer to the ride. This was NOT happening. He sighed and pulled them towards a nearby bench.
"Are you okay?" he asked Koyama, who was rubbing at his eyes furiously. "....you know, I never thought you'd have this cute side of you," he joked, making the other blush.
"Sorry," Koyama mumbled meekly. Uchi laughed and ruffled his hair.
Bitter Tears~
Koyama sighed. It had been the worst day in his life thusfar. They had found out that Uchi was going to be suspended for an unspecified amount of time for his drinking incident.
It hurt. Koyama felt responsible for not taking good enough care of his friend.
What now? he thought bitterly.
"Keiichiro, someone's here to see you!" he heard his mom call from downstairs.
He was surprised to find Uchi standing awkwardly in front of his bedroom door when he opened it.
"Hey, can I come in?" the younger one asked timidly. Koyama nodded and permitted him entrance. Uchi looked like a mess. Dark color hovered under his puffy bloodshot eyes, his usually fair shiny hair limp and unkept.
"Guess I screwed it up big time, didn't I?" Uchi stated, sitting down on Koyama's bed. The latter stayed silent, unsure of what to say. He sat down next to Uchi on the bed.
And Koyama had a right to be at a loss for words. Here next to him was one of his closest friends in NEWS, apart from Shige and Kusano. They had grown so close over the course of two years, to the point where they went to the onsen together, just the two of them. Koyama felt that every time, his conversations with Uchi would get deeper and more intimate. Uchi practically held his soul, and in one mistake, completely shattered it.
But when Uchi began to sob uncontrollably, his thin frame shaking from the sudden rush of emotion, Koyama threw aside all doubt and anger and accusation. He pulled the crying boy into a strong embrace, holding on for all he was worth.
He needs me.
Apologies were mumbled over and over against Koyama's neck as he whispered soothing words into Uchi's hair. His own tears began to fall as the two friends lamented a crucial point in their lives.
The night passed away slowly, as each made their feelings clear to each other.
I'm sorry. Will you forgive me?
I'll be here for you. I won't give up on you.
Hopeful Tears
"Koyama! Hurry up and come to the Dome!" Yamapi shouted in his ear.
Koyama stared at his phone, unsure of what to think. He had expected to spend New Year's Eve quietly, but this sudden phone call disrupted his peace, not that he minded. Excitement rose in him.
"May I ask why?" he asked slowly, almost unable to contain his emotion.
"Baka! Why else? Didn't you get the notice from the agency? NEWS is performing at the countdown!"
"What?" he gasped, standing up. "When...how...us....what about Uchi and Kusano?" he blurted out.
Yamapi's voice was grave. "We don't know yet. For now, we're back as a 6-member group. I'm sure they'll let us know soon."
"I understand," Koyama said quickly. "I'll be there right away."
Right after he hung up, he got calls from the agency and an ecstatic Shige.
As Koyama headed out the door, he couldn't help but think...
But what about Uchi and Kusano?
When he and Shige reached the changing rooms, their manager came in to give them a quick run-down of what was going on.
"Any questions?" the manager asked at the end of their prep.
"Um..." Koyama started, his eyes meeting Shige's, "what about Uchi and Kusano?"
The manager sighed. "Thought you'd ask. For now, Johnny is letting them return as trainees. We'll see if they'll be returning to their original groups." He paused, letting that sink in. "But for now, enjoy yourselves. You're a group again, and they're getting another chance. Congratulations boys."
Shige and Koyama looked at each other, nervous anticipation and excitement all jumbled up.
"Let's do our best," Koyama said finally, after the initial shock wore off. "For those two as well."
Shige nodded and they began to change.
It was a pretty disastrous performance, where only Massu could remember the dance steps, but they didn't care that all they could do on stage was give big goofy grins as they sang the familiar and memory-packed songs together once more.
The 6 members met backstage. They were unable to speak for several moments, just by the extraordinary monstrosity of the moment.
Koyama and Massu were crying while Shige tried to hide the tears, but failed. Yamapi gave Koyama a big reassuring hug as the other members shyly began to strike up conversation.
Suddenly, Koyama looked up and stared. Two all too familiar people stood in the doorway.
"Tadaima!" a crying Uchi and Kusano shouted.
No one knew how Koyama did it, but he made it to the two before anyone else could comprehend what was happening and pulled them into a bone-crushing embrace.
"Group hug!" Yamapi shouted and everyone jumped in to join them.
Amidst the huge tangle of bodies, Koyama looked up into the tear-stricken face of Uchi. They both smiled, exchanging similar thoughts.
"Let's do our best from now on, okay?" Koyama said, feeling the tears coming back.
Uchi nodded.
There would be more tears to come, but they knew that they had someone to share them with.
The End
"I realized that I've always been helped out by Koyama's kindness and gentleness. Thank you." -Uchi Hiroki
"Uchi's light-hearted personality makes my worrisome nature disappear. I'm always thankful for that." -Koyama Keiichiro.
